GSM stands for grams per square metre, it’s simply a measure of how much the fabric weighs for a given area. It tells you nothing directly about strength, bonding quality or how well the interlining will perform; it only tells you how heavy the material is.

For this category, the base fabric is made by bonding polyester fibres together rather than weaving them, and one side carries a heat-activated adhesive coating. Non woven interlining fabric gets its GSM from the weight of this bonded fibre layer. A higher number means more fibre packed into the same area, which generally means a firmer, heavier hand-feel, but not necessarily a stronger bond or better performance for every application.

“It’s a safer default when I’m not sure.” Going heavier as a hedge often creates a different problem: a garment part that feels stiff, doesn’t drape correctly, or shows visible creasing where the fabric is meant to fold. That’s not a safer outcome, it’s a different failure mode.

“More weight equals more value for the price.” GSM is a specification, not a quality signal. A grade that’s heavier than the application needs isn’t giving you extra performance, it’s giving you material the garment doesn’t use.

The practical risk with over-specifying GSM in this category specifically is that these are precision applications collars, cuffs, plackets and other smaller parts, where feel and drape matter as much as stiffness. What’s the weight of your fashion fabric? A light, delicate fabric paired with too heavy a grade will feel unbalanced, no matter how well the bond performs. The interlining should support the fabric, not overpower it.

How will the garment be cared for? Repeated washing and drying puts stress on any bonded interior. The right grade holds its shape through that cycle without needing to be heavier than the application calls for.

Have you tested it on your actual fabric? Specification sheets tell you the weight; they don’t tell you how a specific GSM will feel or behave on your specific outer fabric. A quick test panel before a bulk run is the only way to confirm the match.

The right answer is almost always “the lightest grade that gives the part the structure it needs”, not the heaviest grade available.

If your requirement is a suit front, blazer body or sherwani panel, that’s a different, heavier-construction product entirely, and no amount of increasing GSM within this range substitutes for it.
